The Emerald-eyed witch

It was another time, another reality, another world, one in which magic was real and magical creatures wander around fearlessly, but this isn't a fairy tale.

In that era, there was a witch. Alexa, at her very young age was the most powerful and wise witch in the land, her skills surpassed those of her ancestors and so did her beauty. Her fair skin and black hair made her big green eyes pop; she didn't dress like her family did, she wore jeans and a black leather jacket that matched her boots, she was the epitome of a bad girl, which she was.

As a kingdom rule, all members of society had to attend a special school in which they didn’t learn biology or math, they learned about each other and how important they were to keep balance in the world, in order to avoid conflicts or wars among them. Alexa hated those classes.

“What do I care who they are or where they come from? As long as they don't mess with me, they can be rainbows and unicorns and that's fine by me!”
“Well, you must understand that-
“No!” she interrupted, “you must understand there's no such thing as
a perfect society.”
“I disagree,” said a sweet voice in the background.
“Of course you do, princess.”

Alexa didn't mean that in a sarcastic way. The sweet little voice belonged, in fact, to Princess Rosalind. Her mellow personality and warm heart shined through her kind smile and sparkly hazel eyes. She had brown hair like her father and loved to wear colorful outfits just like her mother taught her. She loved romance, and always carried a novel around where a princess was rescued by a prince in a shiny armor.
Everyone at school loved Rosalind for she was kind and always keen to help all the subjects in the kingdom. Alexa, on the other hand, was not so appreciated, as she loved to play pranks and mess with those around her in a playfully evil way.
Both of them were so different, but somehow kept the balance in the kingdom. Everything changed one day. A teacher assigned them a field trip research, and during that trip something awful happened between them that made Alexa furious. Rosalind seemed happy reading her novels that Alexa couldn’t take it anymore. Her green eyes became darker than her hair and she cursed Princess Rosalind to never find the love of a prince so she'll die alone.
“The only fairy tale endings you’ll get are the ones in your books, Princess,” she said with the meanest look on her face.

For many years, her parents looked for suitors to wed the princess, but neither seemed to be interested. They tried to reverse the curse using magic, but that didn't work, no witch was powerful enough to overcome Alexa’s spell. The benevolence of the kingdom rules forbade the King to take any actions against her, so, Princess Rosalind was doomed to spend the rest of her life without a prince by her side.
Rosalind moved to her own place, away from her parents. She hated seeing the sadness and disappointment in their eyes as they will never see her get married to a charming prince.
One day, Alexa was wandering around the kingdom, she found Rosalind's place and barged in. Her house had tons of books mostly romance, and a sewing machine she used to make her dresses, it was decorated with fresh flowers and beautiful paintings Rosalind did herself.

“What the fuck is this? You live in a fairytale, don't you?”
“It's nice to see you too, Alexa. If you are done criticizing my house, you may go now.”
“Oh, where's the sweet girl I went to school with? Your loneliness made you bitter,” said Alexa with satisfaction in her voice.
“Actually, no, not at all. My life is good the way it is.”
“Seriously? You are all alone living among love books, and yearning for a prince that will never come.”
Rosalind smiled. She got up and offered her a drink. “I have beer, you want one?”
Alexa's eyes opened wide. “You, sweet and pure Rosalind, drinking beer? Wow!”
Rosalind smiled again, and nodded.
“What do your parents think of that?”
“Well, they approve my lifestyle. I guess they feel bad for me for not having a husband.”
“I'd feel sorry for you, but I can't! You deserve it.”
“I don't expect you to,” said Rosalind in a weirdly calmed tone.
“Wait.... why don't you seem mad about it?”
“Because I'm not,” she said with a grin.
“What? I took away your chance of finding love and I'm not giving it back! EVER!”
Rosalind giggled. “I have a secret, Alexa. No one knows this.”
Alexa looked at her and her look changed as she heard Rosalind confess that she was never actually into boys.
“So, you are...,” said Alexa very confused.
“Yes, I'm-“
“WHAT?!” interrupted Alexa with her eyes burning with rage! “I casted one of my best spells on you and it was a waste?! How dare you trick me like that? You keep reading these books about prince charming and love and you don't even want that?! What's wrong with you???”
Rosalind laughed. “You're mad at me because I like girls?” she asked.
- “No! I'm mad at you because you lied to me. You, with your perfect hair, and those beautiful eyes that sparkle every time you smile, and-“
They both stared at each other speechless. There was no longer rage in Alexa's eyes. Her emerald eyes merged with Rosalind's hazel-sparkly eyes. And then, they both knew...

Alexa always hated Rosalind way of being; she found her sweetness and innocence annoying, her colorful outfits were too bright, she thought her kindness towards everyone was hypocritical, but what she hated the most was that she would never have her heart.

Rosalind, on the other hand, admired Alexa. Beyond her badass looks she saw a fearless girl that was smart, and very powerful, but tender and caring deep down. To Rosalind, she seemed dangerous and adventurous, but not in a reckless way; she was just the kind of person she was saving her heart for.

After minutes of silence, they went for a walk; they sat on a park bench and talked for hours. Alexa finally told Rosalind what she felt for her, and Rosalind finally got to stare at those eyes for as long as she wanted to... forever.
